Indonesia to separate MBG program budget from education by 2028
Indonesia’s Constitutional Court ruled that the free nutritious meals programme (Makan Bergizi Gratis, MBG) must be funded outside the education budget, with the split to take effect in the 2028 state budget (APBN). Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said the government will comply with the decision and will not alter the already‑finalised 2026‑27 budgets, but will adjust the 2028 budget and study the fiscal impact.
Badan Gizi Nasional (BGN) chief Sudaryono confirmed the agency will implement the programme according to the government’s direction after the ruling. Commission X of the House of Representatives, led by Hetifah Sjaifudian, called for an alternative funding source for MBG now that the education allocation can no longer be used. The ministry is calculating the fiscal consequences, while BGN said it will prioritise MBG in regions with high stunting rates such as Papua, Nusa Tenggara Timur and selected districts in Sumatra and Java.
