Indonesia declares emergency drought status in Gunungkidul and Majalengka districts

The Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, set a drought emergency status from 1 June to 31 August 2026. Head of BPBD Gunungkidul Purwono said the decision follows a BMKG forecast that predicts peak dryness in August. The agency has readied four 5,000‑litre water‑tank trucks and 800 additional water tanks, amounting to roughly four million litres of clean water, ready for distribution despite no formal requests yet.

In Majalengka, West Java, the local BPBD also declared an emergency for drought and forest‑fire risk from 2 June to 31 October 2026. BPBD chief Agus Tamim instructed detailed mapping of affected villages to target water aid. The district prepared similar water‑tank resources and coordinated with the military, police, fire services and volunteers to address both water scarcity and potential land‑fire incidents.

Both districts aim to pre‑empt water shortages during the dry season by mobilising water‑transport assets and enhancing inter‑agency response.
