Indonesia deepens energy and defence ties with Germany and France

Indonesia and Germany reinforced their partnership during German President Frank‑Walter Steinmeier’s state visit, signing funding deals to boost renewable‑energy projects and grid upgrades. The agreements include a €400 million Competitiveness, Investment and Trade Acceleration programme and a $302 million clean‑energy transition fund, part of Germany’s €1 billion commitment to Indonesia’s Just Energy Transition Partnership. Steinmeier said, “I am very glad that we both agree on strengthening partnership … not only at the political level but also in economy, expertise, climate, science and culture.”

In parallel, Indonesia’s defence sector secured a collaboration with French‑based Arquus at the Eurosatory 2026 exhibition. PT Republik Motor Internasional and Arquus signed a pact to co‑develop and produce tactical vehicles locally, aiming to transfer knowledge, technology and supply‑chain capabilities. Founder Norman Joesoef highlighted that “defence industry independence is built through mastery of knowledge, technology and human resources.” The deal is expected to enhance Indonesia’s land‑mobility platforms for military and security operations.
