Indonesia delays free bank account program for citizens

The Indonesian government is delaying its program to provide free bank accounts to citizens aged 17 and older who do not yet have one. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that the program is currently undergoing discussions with the Minister of Finance to determine the budget and implementation scheme.

Data indicates that approximately 76.8 million people require this assistance, with an estimated budget of Rp 3.84 trillion needed to provide an initial balance of Rp 50,000 per person. The delay is due to the need to ensure the accounts do not become dormant and to establish a sustainable follow-up program for those who are not yet covered by existing social assistance schemes for married individuals.

The initiative follows directives from President Prabowo Subianto to expand financial inclusion and facilitate the distribution of government programs. While implementation is unlikely in the remaining months of 2026, the government aims to launch the program in early 2027. Banks such as BRI and BSI have been requested to prepare for the rollout.
