Indonesia financial literacy initiative

Overview

In early August 2026, Bank Danamon and state‑owned pawnshop Pegadaian partnered with Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (OJK) to run a financial‑literacy workshop for students at Suria Harapan School in Jambi. The event included a library upgrade and lessons on money management, avoiding illegal investment schemes, and early‑stage investing across assets such as stocks, bonds, crypto and gold.

Two days later, OJK expanded the campaign at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) in Tangerang, teaming with Toyota Astra Financial Services to launch the “Literasi dan Inklusi Keuangan” program. The regulator emphasized the importance of literacy to help consumers make informed decisions regarding vehicle financing and to avoid impulsive spending habits.

OJK continues to address the gap between Indonesia's 80.51% financial inclusion rate and its 66.46% financial literacy rate through its GENCARKAN literacy drive, which aims for a 98% inclusion rate by 2045. Simultaneously, the regulator is exploring universal banking to allow qualified small banks to offer securities‑trading and underwriting services.

However, the sector faces significant digital risks. The Indonesia Anti-Scam Centre (IASC) reported that digital scams resulted in losses of Rp9.1 trillion as of January 2026, with roughly 1,000 reports filed daily. Furthermore, experts warn that high interest rates exceeding the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS) threshold may leave deposits unprotected.

Regarding industry performance, multifinance investment financing contracted 5.33% year-on-year to Rp167.89 trillion by June 2026 due to selective capital spending, though total multifinance receivables grew 1.88% to Rp511.26 trillion.
