Indonesia ramps up drought and fire response as El Niño intensifies

The Indonesian government has activated extensive measures to mitigate the impacts of the strong 2026‑27 El Niño. President Prabowo Subianto and Coordinating Minister Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono ordered the formation of ground and air task forces, deployment of drones and the expansion of the Operation Modifikasi Cuaca (OMC) weather‑modification programme, which can increase rainfall by 30‑40 percent in targeted areas. The Ministry of Agriculture is distributing water pumps and rehabilitating irrigation networks, while several regional disaster agencies (BPBD) have opened 24‑hour water‑distribution posts and emergency drought‑response centres, notably in Bengkulu Selatan, Kulonprogo and other hard‑hit districts.

BMKG forecasts a very strong El Niño lasting into early 2027, with the peak of the dry season expected in August‑September 2026. It recorded over 5,000 fire hotspots by late July, concentrated in West Kalimantan, South Papua, Riau and other provinces, and warned that the risk of karhutla (forest and land fires) will peak during this period. The agency also urged hydro‑electric plant operators to adjust turbine schedules to preserve water reserves.

Legislators have called for more comprehensive mitigation planning, and the bottled‑water industry anticipates a 6 % growth in 2026 driven by higher demand for safe drinking water during the heat wave. Together, these actions aim to protect water supplies, agricultural output and public health as the country confronts an unprecedented drought and fire threat.
