Indonesia DPR and Government Agree on Police Retirement Age Limits

On 8 June 2026 the Working Committee (Panja) of the draft Police Law (RUU Polri) convened by Commission III of Indonesia’s DPR and the government reached an agreement on new retirement ages for police personnel. The proposal sets the maximum retirement age at 59 years for rank‑and‑file personnel (tamtama and bintara) and at 60 years for officers (first, middle and senior ranks). For four‑star generals the ceiling is 60 years with a possible one‑year extension based on presidential decision, as explained by Deputy Minister of Law Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej: “Khusus untuk perwira tinggi bintang empat, usia pensiun paling tinggi 60 tahun dan dapat diperpanjang satu tahun sesuai dengan kebutuhan yang ditetapkan berdasarkan keputusan presiden.”

The government argued that differentiating retirement ages preserves motivation and balances career length across ranks, citing concerns that a uniform 60‑year limit would demotivate enlisted members and create an imbalance in service years. Legislators initially pushed for a single 60‑year rule, with Committee III chair Habiburokhman asking “Sudahlah, sama saja 60 ini. Setuju 60 tahun semua?” but ultimately accepted the split proposal. The agreed provisions will be incorporated into the amendment to Law No. 2 of 2002 on the Police, replacing the previous maximum of 58 years (or 60 years for specialist officers).
