DPR RI pushes Asset Forfeiture Bill to prioritize victim compensation
Members of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) are advocating for the Asset Forfeiture Bill (RUU Perampasan Aset) to prioritize the recovery of financial losses for victims of economic crimes. Legislators from Commission III, including Abdullah, Sari Yuliati, and Habiburokhman, emphasized that law enforcement must move beyond merely punishing perpetrators to ensuring that assets seized from fraudulent activities, such as fake investments, illegal robot trading, and umrah travel scams, are returned to the affected citizens.
Currently, many victims struggle to recover their funds even after perpetrators are prosecuted. Lawmakers are calling for detailed technical regulations within the bill to govern the seizure process, including timelines, types of assets subject to forfeiture, and clear distribution mechanisms to verified victims. The goal is to prevent a situation where assets are absorbed into the state treasury while the original victims remain uncompensated.
Other recent financial enforcement actions in Indonesia include the Financial Services Authority (OJK) handing over two directors of PT BPR DCN in Malang to prosecutors for alleged banking crimes involving fictitious credit and unrecorded transactions. Additionally, OJK imposed significant administrative fines on several entities, including PT Sinar Mas Tunggal and various securities firms, regarding stock manipulation cases involving PT Dian Swastatika Sentosa Tbk (DSSA).
