Indonesia Drought Cripples Gunungkidul and Lamongan Water Supplies
Since May 2026 a severe drought has hit Gunungkidul Regency in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The karst landscape limits groundwater retention, causing 329 ponds to dry up and wells to run empty. Residents of Padukuhan Duwet now travel to the Kali Wonosari spring, hauling water in gallons and jerrycans for household use.
In East Java, Lamongan Regency responded to the same seasonal drought by delivering 25,000 liters of clean water to villagers in Dusun Walangkopo, Desa Kedungkumpul on 28 July 2026. The BPBD used five 5,000‑liter tanks and also provided tarps and jerrycans. Bupati Yuhronur Efendi said the emergency aid will continue and announced a long‑term plan to revitalize and deepen a 1.8‑hectare local dam to improve water storage. The regency has identified 15 districts at risk, encompassing 89 villages and 168 hamlets.
