Indonesia drought triggers widespread emergency water distribution

Multiple regions across Indonesia are facing severe water shortages due to prolonged drought and the El Nino phenomenon. In Sampang, East Java, Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa and Regent Slamet Junaidi distributed 11,000 liters of clean water, 80 tanks, and 210 jerrycans to over 4,200 residents in Kedungdung Village.

In Karawang, approximately 27,180 people are affected, with local police, the military, and BPBD collaborating to distribute water and food supplies. Meanwhile, in Tangerang, residents in Pagedangan have reported being forced to consume murky, odorous river water for cooking and drinking due to a five-month dry spell. In South Tangerang, BAZNAS and military units provided 16,000 liters of water and logistics to residents in Setu.

Other relief efforts include water distribution by the Gorontalo Provincial DPRD and BPBD DKI Jakarta in Lenteng Agung, Jakarta. Authorities are emphasizing both short-term water distribution and the need for long-term solutions, such as permanent water source drilling and improved infrastructure, to mitigate recurring seasonal crises.
