East Nusa Tenggara earthquake kills 71 and displaces 60,000
A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, has caused significant casualties and displacement. As of August 19, 2026, the death toll has risen to 71, with 414 people reported injured.
Approximately 60,000 people have been forced into evacuation centers, with the Manggarai district seeing the highest number of displaced residents. The Indonesian government is transitioning from emergency relief to recovery efforts. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) announced that financial assistance will be provided for housing repairs: 15 million rupiah for lightly damaged homes and 30 million rupiah for moderately damaged structures. For severely damaged homes, the government plans to construct permanent replacements.
