Indonesia earthquake kills at least 51 in East Nusa Tenggara

A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Flores Island in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province on Saturday, August 15, 2026. The shallow tremor, recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers by the USGS, has resulted in at least 51 deaths and over 100 injuries.

The disaster triggered more than 340 aftershocks, including a significant 6.2 magnitude tremor. The seismic activity caused widespread destruction, damaging or destroying hundreds of homes, schools, and medical facilities. The National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) reported that approximately 2,000 people have been displaced, with some estimates suggesting up to 5,000 evacuations.

Infrastructure damage is severe, with landslides blocking the Trans-Flores Highway and isolating numerous villages from rescue efforts. Power outages and communication failures have further complicated relief operations. In response, Governor Melki Laka Lena has declared a 14-day emergency period to accelerate search and rescue missions. Authorities have mobilized thousands of police and military personnel, along with helicopters and naval vessels, to reach affected areas and deliver aid.
