Sunda Strait, Indonesia earthquake of magnitude 5.5 shakes region, no tsunami risk

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck the Sunda Strait off Indonesia's Banten province early on Wednesday, with its epicentre about 62 km west‑southwest of Sumur, Pandeglang. The BMKG reported a depth of 43 km and attributed the quake to subduction‑related thrust fault activity. Shaking was felt in Pandeglang, Bogor and surrounding districts at intensity levels III‑IV on the MMI scale. BMKG officials confirmed there was no potential for a tsunami and, as of 03:05 WIB, no aftershocks had been detected. Authorities urged residents to remain calm, avoid unverified rumors, and inspect homes for damage.

Earlier, a separate tremor of magnitude 5.3 was also recorded in the Sunda Strait area, also causing no casualties or tsunami warning. Both events highlight ongoing seismic activity in the region.
