Flores, Indonesia: 7.7-magnitude earthquake kills 54 and triggers state of emergency

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake has struck the Flores region in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, causing widespread destruction and significant loss of life. The death toll has risen to at least 54 people, with over 130 others injured. The disaster has left more than 12,000 people homeless and damaged thousands of homes and critical public infrastructure, including schools and healthcare centers.

In response to the crisis, the Governor of East Nusa Tenggara has declared a 14-day state of emergency to accelerate relief, evacuation, and medical support. Rescue operations are ongoing, though hampered by landslides, damaged roads, and power outages. Authorities have deployed military, police, and aerial support to deliver aid to remote areas.

Seismic activity remains high, with nearly 1,600 aftershocks recorded since the initial disaster. Recent tremors, including a magnitude 5.6 quake and a magnitude 5.9 quake, continue to impact the region. This event is noted as one of the most severe seismic incidents in Indonesia since the 2022 Cianjur earthquake.
