Indonesia advances energy transition via biodiesel, bioethanol, and mining reforms
Indonesia is advancing its energy transition through several key initiatives. The government is evaluating the introduction of a B60 biodiesel blend by 2027, following the rollout of B50. Currently, B50 biodiesel has reached approximately 94 percent of participating gas stations, with 6,050 locations already distributing the fuel. This shift aims to reduce diesel imports and save foreign exchange reserves.
In the fuel sector, Pertamina is preparing infrastructure to support a mandatory E20 bioethanol blend in gasoline, targeting full implementation by 2028. Additionally, Pertamina is expanding its Green Energy Station network to support the electric vehicle ecosystem through charging and battery swapping facilities.
In the mining sector, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources reported that while coal production is projected to decrease by 8 million tons per month in 2026, non-tax state revenue (PNBP) from coal has increased to Rp 66 trillion. Similarly, nickel PNBP rose to Rp 21 trillion as of August 2026, despite a decrease in nickel ore production. Officials emphasize that management is shifting focus from production volume to maximizing economic value through downstream processing.
