Indonesia expands coastal mangrove and tree‑planting projects

The city of Pekalongan in Central Java launched a mangrove arboretum, planting twelve mangrove species to serve as an education centre and to combat coastal erosion and rising sea levels. Mayor Aszan Arslan Djunaid emphasized the project’s role in restoring the shoreline and engaging residents in environmental stewardship.

Separately, PT Pegadaian’s Surabaya regional office planted 240 avocado and tabebuya trees in the village of Ngijo, Malang Regency, as part of its corporate social and environmental responsibility programme. Company leaders and local officials highlighted the long‑term benefits for air quality, water resources and community awareness of climate‑change mitigation.

Both initiatives aim to strengthen coastal ecosystems, promote sustainable land use and involve local communities in Indonesia’s broader climate‑action efforts.
