Indonesia expands HIV screening in Sidoarjo as case detections rise

Indonesia’s Ministry of Health said the rise in reported HIV cases in Sidoarjo Regency reflects the success of expanded early‑detection services, not a surge in transmission. Cumulative data show 1,183 HIV cases among people aged 0‑24 identified from 2001 through June 2026, driven by broader testing in hospitals, health centers, clinics and community‑based sites. The ministry also reported 163 HIV‑positive pregnant women between 2022 and June 2026, underscoring efforts to prevent mother‑to‑child transmission.

Health officials urged the public to get tested without fear, emphasizing that early diagnosis enables prompt antiretroviral therapy, allowing people living with HIV to lead healthy, productive lives. The program also seeks to reduce stigma toward people with HIV and strengthen coordination with local health agencies.

According to Acting Director General of Disease Control Dr. Andi Saguni, the increase in detected cases demonstrates the effectiveness of the detection program, not a rise in new infections, and the ministry will continue supervision and outreach to maintain and improve these outcomes.
