Indonesia HIV detection and stigma response

Indonesia’s Ministry of Health expanded HIV screening across hospitals, health centres, clinics and community sites in Sidoarjo Regency, leading to a higher number of reported cases. Officials stressed that the rise reflects the success of early‑detection services rather than a surge in new infections and highlighted efforts to prevent mother‑to‑child transmission and reduce stigma.

Following the surge in detected cases, the Minister of Women Empowerment and Child Protection called for an immediate end to discrimination against children living with HIV. She noted that 522 infected children were identified in Sidoarjo and advocated for protecting their health, education and wellbeing under constitutional and child‑protection laws. The minister also promoted play‑based development, linking inclusive, stigma‑free environments with supportive play spaces for children.

Together, the expanded testing programme and the child‑welfare ministry’s anti‑stigma campaign illustrate Indonesia’s broader push to improve HIV detection, treatment access and social acceptance, especially for young people.
