Indonesia expands Red and White Fishing Village program to boost coastal economies

The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is implementing programs to strengthen coastal economies through the development of Red and White Fishing Villages (KNMP) in several regions.

In Konawe, Southeast Sulawesi, the ministry provided training to 120 fishing families in the Sorue Jaya village. The initiative aims to create an integrated economic ecosystem following infrastructure development. Training includes ecoprint production for wives of fishermen, T-shirt screen printing to support local tourism near Bokori Beach, and technical guidance on boat engine maintenance in collaboration with Honda.

In Pamekasan, East Java, the KKP is constructing three Red and White Fishing Villages in the villages of Padelegan, Branta, and Lesong Dhaja. The project focuses on improving the quality of fishing settlements by providing supporting infrastructure and facilities to bolster local fisheries and coastal community livelihoods. Local authorities in Pamekasan are monitoring the construction progress to ensure optimal implementation.
