Indonesia expands waste-to-energy projects and infrastructure

Indonesia is expanding its waste-to-energy (WtE) infrastructure through various national and regional initiatives. The Indonesian government has designated three primary Waste-to-Energy (PSEL) sites as National Strategic Projects (PSN): Bekasi, Bogor Raya, and Denpasar Raya. Under current regulations, electricity generated from these facilities will be purchased by PLN at a rate of US$ 0.2 per kWh.

In Batam, BP Batam is actively seeking Japanese partners, such as JFE Engineering Corporation, to develop a project capable of processing 1,205 tons of waste daily to produce approximately 20 MW of electricity. Meanwhile, in Bantul, the local government is addressing logistical gaps to support the Piyungan PSEL facility, noting a current shortage of 14 trucks needed to meet the daily 250-ton supply requirement.

Beyond large-scale infrastructure, waste management is increasingly integrated into sustainable property development. The Award4Change 2026 recognized various entities for their contributions to circular economy practices and responsible waste management across local governments, corporate sectors, and residential areas.
