Indonesia Extends Retirement Age for Police Chief by Up to One Year

Indonesia's government and parliament have agreed to adjust the retirement age for the country's top police officers. The new police law (RUU Polri) sets the maximum age for four‑star police chiefs (Kapolri) at 60, with the possibility of a one‑year extension or further extension as needed, based on a presidential decision.

The change was finalized in discussions held on June 8‑9 2026 and incorporated into Article 30 paragraph 5(c) of the law. The reform also aligns the retirement ages of other police ranks with civil service standards, setting the limit at 59 for enlisted personnel, 60 for other officers, and up to 65 for certain functional positions.
