Indonesia stock market plunges amid MSCI reclassification proposal

The Indonesian stock market has experienced severe volatility following an announcement from MSCI regarding a potential reclassification of Indonesia from an Emerging Market to a Standalone Market. This news triggered a massive sell-off, with the Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) plunging 11.57 percent to 5,185.11 at the close of trading on Friday, October 16, 2026, marking its deepest daily decline since the 1998 financial crisis.

On Monday, October 19, the market remained under pressure, with the IHSG opening down 4.31 percent to 4,961.88. The LQ45 blue-chip index also saw significant losses. In response to the market turmoil, the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) implemented a new policy reducing the lower auto-rejection (ARB) limit from 15 percent to 7 percent for stocks priced between Rp11 and Rp200, effective immediately through December 31, 2026.

MSCI has opened a consultation period for market participants to provide feedback on the proposal, which is expected to conclude by April 30, 2027, with a final decision due by June 30, 2027. The Otoritas Jasa Keuangan (OJK) is currently analyzing the potential impact of this reclassification on national financial stability. While the market faces significant capital outflow risks, Indonesian officials maintain that the nation's economic fundamentals remain strong.
