Indonesia faces significant housing backlog and uninhabitable homes
Indonesia is addressing significant housing challenges across several regions. In South Sumatra, the provincial government has set a target to renovate 6,525 uninhabitable houses in 2025. This initiative aims to support low-income families through a combination of regional budgets, central government assistance, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) funding. Currently, South Sumatra reports approximately 195,000 uninhabitable units and a housing backlog of 429,000 households.
In Jakarta, data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) indicates that there are 821,840 uninhabitable homes as of 2026, with the highest concentration located in West Jakarta, which accounts for 258,000 units. Government officials, including the Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas, have been conducting inspections of renovation projects to address these living conditions, particularly for elderly residents in areas such as Cengkareng.
