Indonesia Faces Water Contamination and Drought‑Related Disasters

In Bengkulu Selatan, about 800 households in Pasar Pino reported itching that residents suspect is caused by waste discharged from PT Sinar Bengkulu Selatan (PT SBS). The district head, Rifai Tajuddin, summoned PT SBS management for explanations, noted that the company is supplying roughly 10,000 liters of clean water daily, and arranged free health services while awaiting laboratory test results on the river water.

In West Java’s Sukabumi Regency, a prolonged drought triggered 32 disaster events in the past month, dominated by forest‑fire incidents (18) and drought‑related incidents (10). No fatalities were recorded, but some infrastructure was damaged, including two houses and road and water‑channel sections. The local disaster agency (BPBD) and the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) provided clean‑water assistance to affected villages, and the emergency response status ended on 31 July 2026, with ongoing monitoring and aid coordination.

Both regions illustrate the growing environmental health challenges faced by Indonesian communities amid water contamination and severe dry‑season conditions.
