Indonesia faces water shortages due to prolonged dry season

Prolonged dry season conditions in Indonesia have led to significant water shortages across multiple regions. In West Java, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported that drought has affected approximately 519,687 people across 175 districts and 387 villages as of August 18, 2026. The impact is most severe in Bogor Regency, affecting over 180,000 residents, followed by Bekasi Regency and Purwakarta Regency.

To mitigate the crisis, authorities have distributed over 12 million liters of clean water to affected areas. In Bogor, 1,743,500 liters were delivered, while Bekasi received the largest distribution of 5,322,800 liters.

In Gorontalo City, Perumda Muara Tirta is urging residents to monitor the water distribution network and immediately report any pipe leaks. Director Lucky Paudi emphasized that rapid reporting is essential to prevent water waste, as raw water sources are currently declining due to the peak of the dry season. Residents are advised not to attempt repairs themselves to avoid further system disruptions.
