Virgo Transport 8 ferry accident: 129 people missing in Java Sea
Search and rescue operations are ongoing in the Java Sea following the capsizing of the Virgo Transport 8 ferry. The vessel, which was traveling from Surabaya to Banjarmasin, lost contact on Sunday, September 13, 2026, amid adverse weather conditions. Out of 243 people on board, 114 have been accounted for, including 108 survivors and six deceased individuals. However, 129 people remain missing.
The wreckage of the ship is currently resting at a depth of approximately 30 meters. Basarnas, Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency, has expanded the search area to 4,600 nautical miles, divided into six sectors. Rescuers are utilizing advanced technology, including the KRI Canopus warship, which is equipped with underwater drones, a multibeam echo-sounder, and a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to assist in underwater searches.
Severe weather and high waves, measured between 1.75 and 2.5 meters, have hindered efforts, particularly delaying the deployment of specialist divers and complicating the transfer of survivors between vessels. While authorities are considering towing the wreckage to shallower waters, the primary focus remains on locating the missing passengers and crew. Local government in South Kalimantan has also mobilized medical facilities to treat the survivors.
