Indonesia ferry fire kills 5, leaves 41 missing FAST-MOVING

A fire broke out on the passenger ferry Mutiara Sentosa 2 off the northern coast of Sumenep, East Java, on 2 August 2026. The vessel was carrying 271 people (232 passengers and 39 crew) on a Surabaya‑to‑Makassar route when flames erupted between 06:00 and 07:00 local time.

Authorities confirmed five deaths and 41 people still missing. Initial rescue efforts saved 225 occupants; later updates reported a total of 234 passengers evacuated, including 229 survivors. The operation involved numerous ships, such as the Meratus Pematang Siantar, TB Hasnur 26, Transco Arafura and others, coordinated by the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) and the Ministry of Transportation.

The ferry’s captain reported the fire before contact was lost, and the cause remains under investigation by the Ministry of Transportation and Basarnas. Minister of Transportation Muhammad Masyhud and Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi pledged continued monitoring and evaluation of the ferry operator.
