Entities: Ministry of Transportation (Indonesia) · Basarnas · National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) · Basarnas (National Search and Rescue Agency) · Muhammad Masyhud

Overview

On the morning of 2 August 2026 a fire broke out aboard the passenger ferry Mutiara Sentosa 2 while sailing north of Madura Island, about 19 nautical miles off Sapudi. The 160‑metre vessel was carrying 271 people (232 passengers, 39 crew). Flames erupted between 06:00 and 07:00 WIB, prompting passengers to abandon ship and jump into the sea. Nearby vessels—including Meratus Pematang Siantar, TB Hasnur 26, Transco Arafura and others—rescued survivors; by the afternoon 225‑232 people had been evacuated, and a final count confirmed 234 passengers rescued, five deaths and 41 missing. The captain reported the fire before contact was lost. The Ministry of Transportation, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) and the National Safety Committee have opened an investigation into the cause. Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono and Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi pledged to verify passenger data, continue rescue operations and improve maritime safety standards.
