Indonesia Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa Rejects Resignation, Dismisses Crisis Fears

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa told reporters he has no intention of stepping down, stressing his duties align with the President’s agenda and that rumors of his resignation are unfounded. He highlighted Indonesia’s fiscal health, noting a primary surplus of Rp58.6 trillion and a modest APBN deficit of 0.70 % of GDP as of May 2026.

Purbaya also affirmed that the country is not heading toward an economic or monetary crisis similar to 1997‑98, saying, “We are not going toward a situation like that of 1997‑1998. Our fiscal is good, the economy is good.” He linked rupiah stability to tighter coordination between the finance ministry, Bank Indonesia and the government, and warned against any remaining dollar‑denominated transactions, adding, “Kalau ada dolar itu, laporin saya, nanti saya hajar.”

The minister promised to ease the burden on merchants and households, noting that a synchronized fiscal‑monetary policy would help strengthen the rupiah and keep prices stable for small traders and consumers.
