Indonesia food prices fluctuate amid holiday preparations

Food price stability remains a key concern in Indonesia as the country approaches the Christmas and New Year period. In Surabaya, East Java, the local government has implemented the Cheap Food Movement (Gerakan Pangan Murah) to protect consumer purchasing power. This initiative, organized by the Department of Food Security and Agriculture, provides essential commodities such as SPHP rice, cooking oil, eggs, and sugar at subsidized rates.

National data from the National Strategic Food Price Information Center (PIHPS) shows dynamic price movements across various commodities. As of late October 2026, red onion and garlic prices have seen decreases, with red onions priced at Rp37,150 per kilogram and garlic at Rp38,500 per kilogram. Other commodities, including various grades of rice, chili, poultry, beef, and sugar, continue to experience market fluctuations.
