Indonesia implements food supply measures to stabilize chili and rice prices

Indonesia is taking steps to stabilize food prices and ensure national food security amid inflation and climate concerns. The National Food Agency (Bapanas) has facilitated the air shipment of three tons of red bird's eye chili from East Java to North Sulawesi to mitigate price surges in non-production regions. In North Sulawesi, chili prices have reached approximately Rp127,604 per kilogram, significantly higher than the Rp58,720 average in East Java.

Regarding staple grains, Perum Bulog reported that national rice reserves remain secure despite potential El Niño impacts. Bulog has achieved 102.88 percent of its government procurement target, reaching over 4.1 million tons. Officials estimate that current stocks and existing market supplies are sufficient to meet national needs through July 2027.

Market data from mid-October 2026 shows fluctuating prices for various commodities in Jakarta. While some chili varieties and rice types have seen price decreases, other items like cooking oil and certain onions have experienced increases. Red bird's eye chili prices specifically have been noted as a significant driver of inflation.
