Indonesia forest fire response: Japan deploys helicopters as hotspots decline
Efforts to combat forest and land fires (karhutla) in Indonesia are intensifying through international aid, corporate donations, and regulatory adjustments. The Japanese government, via the Japan Self-Defense Forces, has deployed CH-47 Chinook helicopters to assist firefighting operations in Ketapang, West Kalimantan, specifically targeting areas difficult to access by land.
In West Kalimantan, BRI has donated 20 water pump units to Kodim 1204/Sanggau-Sekadau to support emergency response and fire suppression. Simultaneously, the Ministry of Law and Human Rights in Central Kalimantan is working to harmonize regional legal products to ensure coordinated and effective management of fire incidents across various regencies.
Satellite data indicates a significant decline in high-confidence hotspots nationwide, dropping from 932 to 344 in a single day. Central Kalimantan saw the most substantial reduction, falling from 643 to 156 hotspots, though it remains the province with the highest number of active hotspots. Despite the decrease, authorities maintain high alert levels as smoke continues to impact air quality and visibility in Sumatra and Kalimantan.
