Indonesia forest fires cause transboundary haze and health crisis
Indonesia is facing a significant escalation in forest and land fires (karhutla) in 2026, causing widespread ecological and health crises. Greenpeace Indonesia reports that smoke from these fires has crossed international borders, affecting Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
In Sumatra, BMKG has detected thousands of hotspots, with the highest concentration in South Sumatra. The Ministry of Health has recorded over 113,000 cases of Acute Respiratory Infection (ISPA) across 63 affected regencies and cities, with a significant number of cases involving young children.
The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry is responding by deploying 5,000 civil servants to supplement the 2,579 active Manggala Agni personnel. Efforts include weather modification operations and the strengthening of community-based fire prevention groups. Experts and stakeholders are calling for a shift from repressive legal approaches toward structural prevention, focusing on land governance and the socio-economic roots of land clearing via fire, particularly in vulnerable peatland ecosystems.
