Indonesia intensifies firefighting near Nusantara capital
Indonesia is intensifying efforts to combat widespread forest and land fires across Borneo and Sumatra, which have burned approximately 73,311 hectares. The fires have caused thick smoke haze that has spread to neighboring countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines.
Authorities are focusing on protecting the area surrounding Nusantara, Indonesia's future capital. In the Nusantara region, approximately 400 hectares have burned as of September 2, with the largest fire affecting about 300 hectares of Bukit Suharto Forest Park. To contain the blaze, Indonesia is deploying 53 aircraft for water bombing and cloud seeding operations. Japan has also provided aircraft and personnel to assist with fire and haze management.
In the energy sector, SKK Migas reports that 72% of upstream oil and gas operating areas are currently in a safe status, though BP Berau remains in emergency response status. Meanwhile, the government is conducting weather modification operations in West and Central Kalimantan to induce rain and moisten peatlands to prevent further spread.
