Indonesia implements irrigation programs to bolster food self-sufficiency
The Indonesian government is advancing strategic agricultural programs to strengthen national food security, notably through the Pump Irrigation (Irpom) initiative. In Soge Village, Indramayu Regency, the program has expanded from supporting one farmer group in its first phase to four groups in the second phase, providing essential water access during the dry season.
Legislators have expressed support for these efforts, noting that the government aims to achieve food self-sufficiency and reduce imports. Strategic targets include increasing planting areas from approximately 10 million hectares in 2024 to over 11 million hectares by 2026. These goals are supported by infrastructure improvements, such as irrigation network repairs and the provision of seeds and production facilities, to optimize land productivity.
