Indonesia intensifies teacher training in AI and coding

Educational institutions and government bodies in Indonesia are intensifying efforts to upskill teachers in response to rapid technological advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence and coding.

In Jepara, Central Java, Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) conducted training for 64 informatics teachers from various junior high schools. The program focused on strengthening computational thinking, coding, and the ethical use of AI. The initiative aims to prepare educators to teach these subjects as elective courses, addressing the gap where many teachers lack specific informatics backgrounds.

Nationally, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) has launched the 2026 Competency Improvement Program for Vocational Educators. Deputy Minister Atip Latipulhayat emphasized that continuous upskilling is mandatory to ensure vocational school graduates remain relevant to industry needs. The program targets technical professional competence, pedagogy, and mindset shifts to keep pace with the rapid evolution of technologies like AI.
