Indonesia issues tsunami warning after 7.7‑magnitude Sulawesi Sea earthquake

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed a magnitude‑7.7 tectonic earthquake in the Sulawesi Sea on Monday at 06:37 WIB. The quake’s epicentre was located west of Karatung Island, North Sulawesi, at a depth of 47 km. BMKG’s tsunami early‑warning system detected minor sea‑level anomalies of 9–18 cm at three tide‑gauge stations in North Sulawesi and North Maluku and issued an updated alert covering coastal districts in North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, North Maluku and East Kalimantan.

Areas classified as "Siaga" (alert) include Manado, Minahasa, Buol, the Sangihe Islands, Gorontalo and several other towns, with predicted wave arrival times between 06:51 and 07:34 WIB. "Waspada" (watch) zones such as Talaud, Bitung and Halmahera are also advised to avoid the coast. BMKG urged residents to follow evacuation instructions from local disaster‑management agencies. No structural damage or casualties had been reported at the time of the releases.
