Indonesia launches 100 GWp solar power program to boost energy independence
President Prabowo Subianto has launched a groundbreaking program for a 100 GWp solar power plant (PLTS) project in Gilimanuk, Bali. The initiative is a key component of Indonesia's national priority program for energy and water independence, aimed at reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi stated that the President has ordered the acceleration of the project with a target completion date of 2029. The program is expected to generate annual electricity cost efficiencies of approximately Rp73.9 trillion. The development will proceed in stages, including an initial 17 GWp phase, followed by 18 GWp and 30 GWp phases.
For 2026, the government aims to construct 30 GWp of solar capacity while simultaneously decommissioning 13 GW of diesel power plants. While Indonesia possesses a solar energy potential of roughly 3,294 GWp, the installed capacity as of April 2026 was only about 1.5 GWp. The project is also projected to drive economic growth and job creation, with the 2025-2034 electricity supply plan potentially creating 1.7 million jobs, including 760,000 green jobs.
