Indonesia launches 2026 Economic Census to map household and digital economy

Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS) began the 2026 Economic Census on 17 June, aiming to survey every household in the country. In Banyuwangi, the district head Ipuk Fiestiandani participated as a respondent while about 1 953 enumerators conduct door‑to‑door interviews through 31 August. BPS chief Abdus Salam stressed that the data are confidential and unrelated to tax collection, and will serve as a basis for targeted development programs.

The census also seeks to capture the rapid shift toward digital transactions, e‑commerce, QR‑code payments and online gold investments. Inspector‑General Dadang Hardiwan highlighted the need to document new business models and digital platforms to provide accurate economic indicators for future policy making. Collaboration with provincial authorities, media and the public is being encouraged to ensure comprehensive coverage.
