Indonesia launches BPI Danantara to overhaul state-owned enterprises
The Badan Pengelola Investasi Daya Anagata Nusantara (BPI Danantara) was created under Indonesia’s 2025 law to consolidate more than 1,000 state‑owned enterprises (BUMN) into roughly 200‑300 entities. The proposal received backing at a round‑table discussion organized by the Nagara Institute, where DPR members and economists argued that the restructuring could curb overlapping businesses and refocus BUMN on strategic sectors. Recommendations will be sent to President Prabowo Subianto.
Economists such as Yanuar Rizky warn that Danantara operates without published financial statements for 2025, describing the arrangement as a “shadow privatisation.” Rizky said, “Sebenarnya ini sudah terjadi yang namanya shadow privatisasi, samar.” He likened the body to the historic VOC, noting that it now controls assets claimed to be worth up to Rp15 000 trillion, yet its legal status and audit procedures remain unclear, raising governance concerns.
