Indonesia launches free travel programs for 2026/2027 holiday season

The Indonesian government is implementing free travel programs and transportation discounts to support mobility and regional economies during the 2026 Christmas and 2027 New Year holidays. The initiative includes a free homecoming program (Mudik Gratis) featuring 70 buses with a total capacity for 2,882 passengers, targeting ten cities in Java: Solo, Wonosobo, Semarang, Wonogiri, Cilacap, Purwokerto, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Malang, and Madiun.

In addition to the bus program, the government has allocated Rp883.4 billion to provide ticket discounts for airplanes, trains, ships, and ferries. These measures aim to reduce travel costs for citizens and encourage the use of public transportation during the high-demand holiday period. Registration for the free bus service is scheduled to open in December 2026, with departures planned for December 22 and 23, 2026.
