Indonesia launches National Cheap Food Movement to stabilize prices
To commemorate World Food Day 2026, the Indonesian government has launched the National Cheap Food Movement (GPM), a synchronized initiative spanning 38 provinces and 514 regencies and cities. The program aims to ensure food affordability, maintain purchasing power, and control food inflation across the country.
Supported by the National Food Agency (Bapanas), Perum BULOG, and ID FOOD, the movement provides essential commodities such as rice, cooking oil, sugar, eggs, and chili at prices below market rates. Local governments in regions including Makassar, Lampung Timur, Kudus, Seruyan, Kotabaru, Majalengka, and Bojonegoro have actively implemented these markets to stabilize supply and demand.
Bapanas Head Andi Amran Sulaiman emphasized that the initiative aligns with presidential directives to stabilize staple food supplies. Additionally, the government is focusing on improving distribution logistics, particularly for commodities like chili, to prevent price spikes during the upcoming Christmas and New Year period.
