Indonesia launches nationwide cheap food movement to stabilize prices
The Indonesian National Food Agency (Bapanas) has launched the Gerakan Pangan Murah (GPM) or Cheap Food Movement simultaneously across 31 provinces. This initiative, conducted in collaboration with TVRI and supported by Bank Indonesia, aims to ensure food availability and maintain affordable prices for the public to stabilize inflation.
Key strategic commodities targeted for price stability include rice, chili, onions, meat, cooking oil, and sugar. In various regions, such as Demak and Kediri, the program has seen high public enthusiasm, with essential goods like SPHP rice and Minyakita cooking oil selling out quickly.
To support the program, Bank Indonesia has integrated digital payment methods like QRIS to promote non-cash transactions. The movement also highlights local food diversification, offering products such as organic rice and corn-based analog rice to support community welfare and purchasing power.
