Indonesia launches nationwide ecosystem restoration movement

Indonesia's Ministry of Forestry has launched a simultaneous Ecosystem Restoration Movement to accelerate the recovery of damaged forests and ecosystems across the country. The initiative was inaugurated during the 2026 National Nature Conservation Day celebrations at the Muara Angke Nature Tourism Park in Jakarta.

Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni acknowledged that the government faces limitations regarding funding and resources, prompting an appeal for cooperation from various stakeholders. He emphasized the necessity of balancing economic development with ecological preservation to prevent excessive forest damage.

As part of the movement, officials released 15 water birds, including the protected black-headed ibis and the little cormorant, into the Muara Angke area. The release was accompanied by the planting of dozens of mangrove trees to strengthen the wetland ecosystem and coastal protection in the metropolitan region. These actions follow directives from President Prabowo Subianto regarding the rehabilitation of critical lands and environmental recovery.
