Virgo Transport 8 ferry lost contact in Java Sea with 243 on board FAST-MOVING

The Indonesian passenger ferry Virgo Transport 8 lost contact in the Java Sea on Sunday, September 13, 2026, while traveling from Surabaya to Banjarmasin. The vessel was reportedly encountering severe weather conditions at the time communication was lost.

According to the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the ship was carrying approximately 243 passengers and crew. As of the latest updates, 103 people have been successfully evacuated, though at least one death has been confirmed among the rescued.

A large-scale search and rescue operation is currently underway, involving multiple vessels and helicopters. The last known position of the ship was approximately 80 to 92 nautical miles southwest of Basirih, Banjarmasin. Authorities are continuing to coordinate with maritime agencies to locate the remaining individuals.
