Indonesia launches Sekolah Rakyat boarding schools for impoverished families

Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf has announced the implementation of 'Sekolah Rakyat' (People's School), a program designed to fulfill President Prabowo Subianto's commitment to providing education for the nation's most impoverished families. The initiative specifically targets 'the invisible people'—those living in extreme poverty who often fall outside of official state data and development reach.

Unlike standard educational institutions, Sekolah Rakyat will operate as a boarding school system. Under this model, the state will cover all costs, including 24-hour education and the daily living needs of the students. The program aims to break the cycle of poverty for children from underprivileged backgrounds who struggle with basic necessities, such as food security and the ability to afford school credentials.
