Indonesia Sekolah Rakyat education program
Overview
Indonesia has implemented the ‘Sekolah Rakyat’ (People’s School) program, a boarding school initiative designed to fulfill President Prabowo Subianto’s commitment to providing education for the nation’s most impoverished families. Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf stated the program specifically targets ‘the invisible people’—those in extreme poverty who often fall outside official state data. Under this model, the state covers all costs, including 24-hour education and daily living needs, to help break the cycle of poverty.
A survey by Media Survei Nasional (Median) indicates the program has received a positive public response, with 56.1 percent of respondents expressing satisfaction. Key drivers for this satisfaction include the provision of free schooling for the underprivileged and increased access to decent, affordable, and equitable education. However, Median Executive Director Rico Marbun noted that public awareness remains an area for improvement, as 38.3 percent of respondents were unaware of the program.
