The Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) program in Indonesia is facing intense scrutiny following widespread reports of food poisoning across multiple regions. In Pati, Central Java, 424 individuals, including students, teachers, and nursing mothers, reported symptoms, with 58 requiring hospitalization.

In Sidoarjo, East Java, laboratory tests confirmed bacterial contamination in food samples provided to students at a boarding school. Similarly, in Tana Toraja, BPOM identified Escherichia Coli in a chicken dish served to hundreds of students. In Lombok Tengah, 352 students fell ill, prompting local parents to demand a temporary halt to the program.

MBG Watch claims to have recorded approximately 45,000 poisoning cases across 36 provinces, suggesting systemic failures in implementation and oversight. In response to these incidents, former Coordinating Minister Mahfud MD has called for a total overhaul of the program's management, including the potential termination of existing contracts and a shift toward village-based or school-based kitchen models to improve local control and safety.
