Indonesia manages forest fires through weather modification and increased oversight

Indonesia is managing widespread forest and land fires (karhutla) across several provinces. Recent data from the Ministry of Forestry indicates that national hotspots have decreased by 121, totaling 567 locations. While hotspots in Central and South Kalimantan have dropped, there has been an increase in West Kalimantan and South Sumatra.

To mitigate these fires, authorities are employing weather modification operations (OMC), water bombing, and aerial patrols. In West Kalimantan, OMC has deployed 7,200 kilograms of NaCl to stimulate rainfall. In Siak, Riau, officials have praised collaborative efforts between government and local communities to manage high-risk peatland areas.

In West Kalimantan, the BKSDA has rescued 24 wild animals, including 15 orangutans, from fire-affected habitats. Meanwhile, regional authorities in West Kalimantan are increasing oversight of forestry permit holders, issuing administrative sanctions and license suspensions to companies found in violation of fire prevention regulations.
