Indonesia optimizes irrigation infrastructure to support agriculture
Indonesian authorities are implementing various water management strategies to support agricultural productivity and food security amidst dry season challenges.
In East Java, the Ministry of Public Works is optimizing the Semantok Dam to supplement water supplies for the Waduk Bening irrigation area in Nganjuk Regency. Through the Brantas River Basin Organization, a water supplement of 1.5 m³ per second is being provided to maintain irrigation services for approximately 8,845 hectares of farmland, specifically targeting areas like Rejoso Kecamatan to mitigate drought impacts.
In South Kalimantan, the Hulu Sungai Utara Regency Government is working to optimize the Alabio Polder pump house to expand irrigation services. The local government plans to integrate scientific recommendations from Lambung Mangkurat University and international experts to develop sustainable wetland agriculture. This initiative aims to improve water management and strengthen regional food security through effective infrastructure and research-based policy.
